The new battle system is fantastic and does a superb job of blending strategy and action. It kind of did in the end – and by that point I’d decided to give it the benefit of the doubt anyway – but others might not be so accepting. As the game unfolds, Cloud assembles a shifting band of allies, many of whom join him in battle. The evil Shinra corporation is bleeding the planet dry of its lifeblood, called “mako”, and the rather naive Avalanche embarks on a campaign that involves blowing up its mako reactors, only to encounter a welter of plot twists before another villain emerges. The original game’s Materia system, which lets you attach different elemental traits to slots in your equipment, is more or less unchanged and brings a wealth of magic attacks and new special abilities. God I love it so much, nostalgia aside it adds a lot of good depth to the story and the battle system is a great modern take on the original. As the credits rolled I felt fulfilled, and excited for what comes next. I can see myself really growing attached. It may run at 30fps but it feels smoother, and never once have I felt performance impacted by any on-screen action. They have complementary skills to the sword-wielding protagonist: Barret, for example, is a tank-like character armed with a machine-gun; Tifa a hand-to-hand combat specialist; and Aerith a staff-wielding mage. There is a lot that’s new in Final Fantasy VII Remake, however, and thankfully most of it fits right in. Another major addition to the remake are the periods of open-world gameplay, in which Cloud and his sidekicks take on side missions in the slums of the mega-city of Midgar, after performing their main-story raids. The reunion at hand may bring joy, it may bring fear, but let us embrace whatever it brings. And don’t even get me started on summons and other highly-damaging skills. As with other Final Fantasy games, a certain amount of cheesiness occasionally creeps in to the narrative. Final Fantasy VII is an ambitious retelling that updates its systems and story for the modern era. Long ago, we looked upon a foreboding sky. They’ll grin from ear to ear during the Don Corneo section of the game, and will love squaring off against recognisable bosses. It’s quite amazing how faithful this remake is to the original, truth be told, and how much the majority of the new scenes added enrich the story. The Next Game in The Dark Pictures Anthology is House of... Pre-order Spider-Man: Miles Morales to Get an Into the Spider-Verse Suit. The memory of the star that threatened all burns eternal in our hearts.
