Ponce was the first city in Puerto Rico where Protestant churches were built. Butting up against the cathedral’s immaculate whiteness is one of the island’s landmarks, a fantastical red-and-black-striped former fire station, a very free rendition of the Alhambra built to serve as the “Arab Kiosk” of Ponce’s 1882 Exposition. San Juan, the capital, was planned and built by the Spanish conquerors, one writer points out, while Ponce is the work of its native sons, making it a truly authentic Puerto Rican city. Founded in 1692 by Ponce de Leon's great-grandson, much of the city's colonial heritage has been beautifully preserved. Medieval and Renaissance works trace an interesting path to the first genre painting by nineteenth-century Puerto Ricans. The woman taking tickets seemed pleased enough. Low key, cozy and unpretentious (10 tables or less), the restaurant offers a limited yet varied international menu infused with local flair. Among its furnishings are some of the most exuberant Thonet pieces—table, settee, magazine rack—I’ve ever seen. The combination of the sweet and tangy orange marmalade complemented the crisp and creamy Foie Gras beautifully. 1 2 3. I am not a big fan of sweet and sour sauces, however, this rich sauce had more of a sweet and spicy feel.
