I love Big Wednesday so much. It came out when I was 14, living in Florida for the summer and trying to learn now to surf but mainly dick dragging. It would have been impossible to write the same level of emotion with the same degree of brevity, despite Big Wednesday feeling more and more novelistic every time I revisit it.
The most pretentious film of its kind, BIG WEDNESDAY may have cost more than all of the other surfing movies ever made put together. You're almost there! While all in all I prefer Milius' directorial debut Dillinger, it's hard to argue against the idea that his surfer epic "Big Wednesday" isn't his classic. The story of three surfers stretches itself out in really uncomfortable positions. The inflated score by Basil Poledouris truest lift it all to a Wagnerian level, and the film is particularly nightmarish whenever Milius attempts to be funny. It must have really flopped. The first hour was just pure, adolescent fun and the last hour made me think hard...it was sad in the best (and in a very relatable) way as I go through similar things to the characters. Coming Soon.
